(7/11/11) More Photos from Bob Geary

Remember when Bob Geary appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien? Well, he did — and this 1994 photo proves it (Bob is the one in the middle). We have some more shots of Bob in interesting situations. Click here to see them.

Editor's note: No, we're not a flack for Bob Geary, he just sends stuff to us. Send us your photos and we'll publish them too!

(7/10/11) Ben McEntee sends a Family Photo

When we received Ben's photo for our Your Classmates — Then and Now section, we also got this great photo of Ben and Louise with their family at Christmas, 2009.

(7/09/11) Bob Geary Unveiled

Have you ever wanted to see Boby Geary in a cute apron? Or discreetly serving fine wine? Maybe you picture him as an Indian chief? Or a blacksmith? Want to see him in a phone booth all alone (not with 22 other guys)? Or maybe you want to buy Bob some clothing — but don't know his size? No problem! Just click here.

(7/08/11) Jack Dold returns from China

Jack Dold sent us this photo taken last September along the Great Wall of China. We cropped it for his photo in Your Classmates — Then and Now but thought you'd want to see this wonder in all its glory.

(7/02/11) Roy Zarucchi

George Walker advises that Roy Zarucchi died of a heart attack a few days ago. We're trying to get more information and will publish it here when we get it. (Roy's last known address was 12800 Comanche Rd. NE, Unit 81, Albuquerque, NM 87111, phone 505-821-9638.)

(7/01/11) Mr. and Mrs. Meschery Send a Photo

Here's the photo Tom sent with his input for Your Classmates — Then and Now. Your editor cropped Melanie out of the photo published with Tom's bio, but here is the picture of a smiling Melanie and Tom.

(6/30/11) Still More Photos (or More Still Photos)

In 2009 the College celebrated the 50th annversary of the 1959 phone booth caper. A number of classmates showed up for the party so we're calling it a "mini-reunion." We unearthed some photos of the event and added them to our Photos from Past Reunions page.

(6/29/11) More Photos of Past Reunions

We've added to our collection of photos from past reunions. We have lots of photos from our 45th, group photos from our 35th and 30th, and an interesting program from our 25th. You can see them all on our Photos from Past Reunions page. If you have photos to add to this collection, please send them to us right away.

(6/21/11) Vic LoGrasso sends a Photo Album

When Vic LoGrasso sent us his input for Your Classmates — Then and Now he included lots of photos showing life in Montana. They didn't all fit in his allotted portrait space but we've posted a link there to a page with all the photos.

(6/21/11) More Memories from Bob Geary

Bob Geary recalls some incidents from our senior year: While our varsity basketball team played Santa Clara's in the (old) San Jose Auditorium, SMC students sat on one side, Santa Clara's on the other side - high above the auditorium floor. While the game was underway below, SC students pelted us with raw eggs.

Coach Bob Hagler was well liked. A lot of students wanted him to replace Jim Weaver as varsity coach. After St. Mary's had lost a basketball game (perhaps to Cal, I forget), some students threw Weaver in effigy off the tower of the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. Hotel personal called the BPD to report a suicide.

(6/19/11) We have Photos from our 45th Reunion

We've obtained photos of our 45th reunion (June 2006) from the Alumni Office. We've posted 24 of them on our website.

(6/14/11) Some Photos Arrive from Ojai

No, this isn't Congressman Anthony Weiner. Weiner doen't wear argyle socks. John McNeil sent this photo along with his submission for Your Classmates — Then and Now. He also sent a more recent photo, one with his wife Joan, which we show below. We cropped John's mug for the Then and Now feature but couldn't bear to leave Joan on the cutting room floor. It looks like they are on a cruise ship and that Johh's wearing a kilt.

(6/12/11) Bob Geary Recalls a Norse God

Bob Geary sent us another remembrance: I remember in the Fall semester of our sophomore year a junior or senior yelling from the rooftop of De La Salle Hall the word, "ODIN." It would be around 1 a.m. in the morning. The chant was loud enough to wake students in De La Salle Hall, also those students in Augustine and Aquinas Halls whose rooms faced De La Salle Hall. This went on for a while and drove Brother Ralph nuts. The student in each instance was mimicking Norsemen calling out to their god - copied from the box office smash hit, The Vikings, released in the Summer of 1958.

(6/04/11) Bob Geary Sends Some Recollections

Bob Geary sent us the group photo from the Senior Retreat. We've posted it on the website. He notes: "For some reason I have the feeling that more of us attended, that we were divided into groups, perhaps for the exact dates spent there, and also for a photograph. You're not in the photo. That's why I think at photograph time they're were too many of us -- so you're in a another group shot on the same day. Maybe you can figure the riddle out. I remember riding in Jim Whaley's metallic-powder-blue Mercury hotrod. Those who rode in his car packed the trunk with every kind of liquor. The two nights we stayed -- quite a few of us played cards, drank liquor and smoked cigars.(I know I did) -- the Franciscans unaware of the goings on."

"I remember during our senior year, person or persons unknown to the victim placed his Beetle Bug in Mitty Hall's recreation room. Wasn't the victim Paul Desrochers? (I might be wrong.) A lot of us seniors lived in Mitty, others lived in De La Salle Hall. Oh, I wasn't a suspect."

"Do you remember Fred 'The Tailor?' He lived in the basement of St. Augustine Hall, did work on the Christian Brothers' garb. He was definitely an Alexander Dumas character -- could have played the prisoner who tells Edmond Dantes (Count of Monte Cristo) where there's buried treasure. Every time I ate in Oliver Hall I made sure Fred the T, wasn't in front of me because his long beard would brush across the stacks of clean plates. Brother Kyran was the one who alerted me about it, then I actually saw the end of his beard make mischief with the plates."

Bob also sent us contact information for Bill Tellman so we've removed Bill from the "Missing Classmates" section and added him to our Class Directory.

(5/15/11) Jim Neylan Advises of Another Deceased Classmate

Jim Neylan reports that he has learned from St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley that Robert Barcklay is deceased.

(5/14/11) Remember Art's Bar?

We came across this ad from 1958 and thought it would bring back a few memories.

(5/5/11) Jim Neylan on Missing Classmates

Our missing classmates department received this email from Jim Neylan:

Hi guys,

Here is what I know about a few of the missing on the list:

Pete Brooks is deceased. He had open heart surgery way back when it was just being done. He lived for a number of years and died of a massive heart attack in the mid '60s.

I heard that both the Gallagher twins are deceased as well, but I am not sure. They went to Saint Mary's High and the school might know more.

Henry Monge and Chuck Pedri both attended the 50th reunion at Saint Mary’s High and the school would have the contact info. Bill Spranger lives in the same state as as Monge and the high school has this contact info as well.

Mike Downs is out of state but I am not sure where.

Hope this helps. See you in July.

(4/16/11) A Note from Gene Womack

We thought we'd share this note that Paul Desrochers received from Gene Womack:

Dear Paul:

Wow, it has been 50 years! I am glad that you dropped me line.

I have had some health issues, prostate, etc., so I hope you are in good health and enjoying life, after all that hard work at college and on the job.

I have many fond memories of you and my years at St. Mary𔄩s. I remember Brother Kyran and Brother Ralph and friends like you that made life at the college so enjoyable. You have always been a class act- even 50 years ago.

I must, however, decline your invitation to attend our 50 year reunion due to health reasons. It was nice to hear from you, please tell everyone hello-- I wish them all, the best in this life.

Gene

(1/13/11) Bob Combatalade Passes Away

We've just received this email from Ron Turner rturner@stmarys-ca.edu at St. Mary's College:

On the evening of January 11, 2011, Bob Combatalade, a proud Gael of the class of 1961, passed away in his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Bob died of cancer & is survived by his wife & three adult daughters. While at Saint Mary's College, amongst other activities, he was a member of both the rugby & baseball teams.

That is all I know at this time. My wife is a good friend of Bob's wife & if anyone from the college is interested in services, which have not been scheduled yet, particulars about survivors, etc. they can contact me & I will obtain what they need.

Dick Woods quickly added this remembrance:

This is very sad news to me. I was looking forward to the reunion. When our baseball team was down in the dumps, as we usually were, we could count on Bob's smiling face out of the bullpen. "Easy Bob" even smiled when they hit him. My condolences to his wife and family. PLease pass this along. No services for me,as I am in Arizona. Bob and I roomed together our senior year.

Editor's Note: We've requested more information and will post it here when we get it.
