Martin P. ("Marty") Callaghan whose photo is in our freshman yearbook has clarified that he’s not the Paul Callaghan pictured in our junior and senior yearbooks. In assembling our comprehensive listing of classmates we had presumed that Martin and Paul were the same individual. So now we’ve added one more name to our list of missing classmates. Anyone know the whereabouts of Paul Callaghan?
John Marty has single-handedly removed seven names from our Missing Classmates list. He’s forwarded contact information for six of his Sacred Heart High School classmates: Porfirio Aguilar, Dennis Burigsay, Edward Handlin, Justin Kielty, James McCann, and Arley McVittie. Sadly, he also reported the 2005 death of Bob Laurent.
Classmates resonding to our "are you coming to reunion weekend?" questionnaire often include a comment in the remarks section. Most often it’s the name of their spouse, but we get other tidbits that are also worth sharing. Here are responses we’ve received:
Bob Geary - Will bring a date (if she’s paroled on schedule).
George Buckingham - Margy and I are looking forward to a great weekend! Thanks to our committee for doing all the work to set this in motion.
Jim Looney - We are planning to come. Jim and Diana
Darrell Jones - I will attend with my wife, Mary Ann Jones.
Bill Chavez - Thanks for the invite . . . . Unfortunately, the dates conflict with our family vacation.
Armando Rendon - Fifty years? It seems just like yesterday. See you all soon.
Dan Leary - I will attend with my wife Linda.
Marty Callaghan - Yes! I’ll be there (subject to my C.O.P.D. situation). I am looking forward to the reunion. I made the 45th gathering. Spouse: Fran
Bill Baumgartner - I will be attending with my wife Cynthia.
Doug Bodine - I will be attending with my wife Barbara.
Frank Lopez - I will be attending with my wife Bertha.
Bill Gerth - MaryKay Gerth. "Picture of the 9/9/10 Committee meeting: Except for Paul Forney, the rest of the committee could pass for Christian Brothers in mufti!"
Tony Waffen - AKA Brother Anthony. Please keep me on the information list. It sounds like a great event.
Tom Uniak - Ann Uniack
Jim Looney - Diana Looney spouse. I will always remember the kindness your family showed to me while at SMC.
Gary Joyce - It’s 51 for me, should have graduated in 1960. If you guys need to hang any of Bro. Ralph’s ducks, just let me know. There may still be a few around. I only hung one... Don’t tell him.
Bill Dunphy - Micki Dunphy
Andre John Marty - Maureen Ann Marty
John McNeil - Joan Mc Neil. Thanks to you and the Committee for putting this week-end together.
George Walker - Gayle and I will attend
Rich Cabrera - Most Likely (1) ... but may bring a friend
Ben McEntee - Spouse: Louise
Russ Meskell - Sounds like the reunion committee is doing a fabulous job. I wouldn’t miss it.
Bob Pola - Looking forward to seeing all the classmates and the changes to the school.
Jack Queen - Great job on the website!!
Paul Desrochers - Joyce. Nice work Al!
We discovered this recent announcement from Bishop Ronald Gilmore of Dodge City, Kansas:
"After some good measure of discernment, Monsignor Brian Moore has decided to turn his retirement-on-paper into a retirement-in-fact. He has moved to the Priests’ Retirement Center in Wichita, August 27th.
"I am grateful for all that Monsignor has done for our diocese, especially in the area of priestly formation. His years at the Josephinum and most recently his years here at home have been full, good, years of service to those trying to answer the call to ordained ministry. They have been rich years for us. We are the direct beneficiaries of Monsignor’s faithfully answering that same call in his own life. Now there is another call within that call: a call to rest in the Lord more exclusively, a call that will surely hold within itself other ways of continuing his life of service. I trust that you join me in wishing Monsignor well, and am praying that this move will be smooth, and in asking the Lord that he may find joy in this new adventure in his life."
Updated contact information for Brian is available in our Class Directory.
Members of the Reunion Committee met on campus on September 9. Pictured here (from left) are Paul Forney, Paul Desrochers, Al Cattalini, Bob Pola, Tom Uniack, George Walker, and Alumni Director Chris Carter. To see more committee photos, including shots of campus venues, click here.
Unfortunately Al, I found one of your "missing classmates" — Robert Muha.
He is deceased. Unfortunately, I do not know the date, but he passed away a number of years ago. The info I have is sketchy. Apparently, while on his way to go fishing, he was killed by a hit and run driver in East Oakland. Maybe someone has access to his obituary in the Oakland Tribune.
This pix was taken in 1961 in a photo booth in S.F. (Priscilla, myself, Bob Muha and John Wolfe.) Bob was the best man at our wedding.
You’ve heard of folks who read the death notices each morning to make sure they’re still alive? Well, we’re thankful that Bob Pola does just that. Today he advised that Henry Gambina passed away on June 30. (Note: You’ll find a link to Henry’s death notice on our Deceased Classmates page.)
"Some sad news was in Sunday’s San Francisco Chronicle about the death of our classmate George Edward Railton, Jr. who passed away May 26th." (Note: There’s a link to George’s death notice on our Deceased Classmates page.)
Vic LoGrasso sent lots of photos from Montana, including this one. We don’t have room to show them all — but we’re sure that an email request to Vic will get them all into your inbox right away.
"All these pics were taken this am, all within 5 miles of the house. Notice in the elk pic, the ones lying in the shade of the trees. The mtn pics are all of the Spanish Peaks just south of us. The yellow wildflowers are Glacier Lillys and the others look like buttercups, but I’m not sure if they are. The red barn is a nearby ranch. They do weddings there, beside being a working ranch. The pic with the stream in the foreground is Spanish Creek. I’ve always wanted to fish here but have avoided it because of the great amount of bears, both Grizzlie and Black, in the area. Hope you enjoy. Vic"
I can give some input on one of our classmates, Minoru Yoshida. We called him Al. He got very sick while still at St. Mary’s during our sophomore year (bleeding ulcers) and due to hospital costs had to drop out of school. He did not return to school and before we graduated he died where he was living and working in Orinda.
It took 49 years but Vic LoGrasso’s graduation portrait is now in the yearbook. You’ll find it immediately following the photo of Roy Zarucchi.
Perhaps trying to bribe your webmaster he also sent this snapshot of Tom Ross and Al Cattalini (nice argyle socks, guys!) relaxing in the tennis courts alongside Augustine Hall.
Vic LoGrasso confirmed that Bob Squeri died of leukemia in our senior year. We’ve added Bob to our Deceased Classmates page.
Also, Vic complained that his portrait wasn’t in the 1961 Yearbook. Anyone have an idea of what Vic was doing when senior portraits were taken?
Thank you for your letter about the planning for a class reunion. To answer your question -- Yes!! The Tom Mon in the Saint Marys database is actually the same as the Thomas Mon Pere in the yearbook. It always amazes me what computers have done to those of us with less than simple last names. Here is the data you requested: phone number is 707 462 1865, and email address is tmonpere@sbcglobal.net. I do appreciate the work you are doing on the reunion, and I will surely access the class website to get up to date with people I have not seen in decades.
Thanks again, Tom MonPere
Hi Everyone,
We’ve spiffed up the website a bit more. The Class Directory is easier to use and a bit more accurate. We’ve pursued Paul Forney’s suggestion that Tom Mon and Thomas Mon Pere might be the same person. We’ve determined that Rowland Cooke and Tom Cook are the same person. And we’ve officially moved Steve Hanson to the Deceased Classmates page. (Click the hyperlink at his name for a most impressive report about the circumstances of his death in Laos in 1967 and his burial in Arlington National Cemetery in 2000.)
In addition to the yearbook photos, we now have a page devoted to photos from past reunions. The photo from our 35th Reunion is posted (can you identify the mystery classmate?) and we hope you can locate other photos to add. Perhaps some will be in the Alumni Office files.
Finally, we’ve added this bulletin board which will hopefully help us keep in touch.
Hi Everyone,
Here are some updates to the Class Website you might want to check:
Yearbook photos from all 4 years are now available.
Taking Paul Forney’s lead, I’ve created a comprehensive listing of 255 names of "members" of the Class of 1961, identifying which yearbooks featured their mug.
Of these 255 names, 130 names are on the "official" SMC Alumni listing; 125 more appeared only in our yearbooks. There are 110 "graduates" pictured in the 1961 yearbook. Of these, 14 are Christian Brothers who never appeared in the earlier yearbooks.
Regards, Al
Dear Captain Cattalini:
Your website is an excellent start (love the password). We have lots of time to complete so I can hold off on my suggestions (like individual pages or subpages with photos of us then & now [so we can recognize each other]). Yes we need our own site independent from SMC but linked to it. Maintain our independence! Don’t let the school dictate anything, it’s our reunion and we will want it done our way!
Yours, Captain Paul Forney USNR (Ret)
I agree with Paul Forney and appreciate the legwork he has done. I’ve put together the beginnings of a Class of 61 Website that’ll allow us to tie everything together. You can view it at http://smc61.cattalini.com/. Note that there is no "www" in the address. Also be aware that most of the site is password protected. The password is ******. A cookie will give you repeated access for a few months but ultimately you’ll need to reenter the password.
Please note that the missing folks whom Paul Forney identified have not been incorporated into this initial version. They’ll be added soon.
My thought is that our website will have a link from the College website but that we need to have an independent site that we control and that will do what we want it to do. I’d appreciate all of you visiting the site and offering me your comments. The site is a bit rough right now, but will get polished and expanded in the months to come. If there is a consensus that we need our own site, I’ll approach the College to proceed. If any of you have webmaster talents, I’d love your help.
Paul Forney has been working over the Holidays, . . . . He’s right on target, what ever happened to these guys like Pat Fleet? Look at Paul’s e-mail and list and see how many you know and let’s see if we can’t communicate with them about the reunion. I’ll also ask the College to find out what happened. Send any information on these guys to me as well and I’ll incorporate them onto our master list.
Al, you are going to work with the college on the communications aspect? Please get in touch with Forney and see if he can help you. I think he has the same idea that we discussed on our telephone conference call.
Happy New Year to all, we’ll have another status report / conference call in a few weeks.
Merry Christmas to all. I didn’t get what I wanted from Santa Claus so screw him!
Paul: Why don’t you create a Google Group to ease communications?
I took step #1 by going to our ’61 Yearbook and checking that against Paul’s list.
You (and SMC) seem to have left our our HERO, Captain Steve Hanson, United States Air Force, Missing in Action over Laos. (I don’t have more details but will search for them).
Here is my list of people in our yearbook who are not on the list:
Brothers: Robert Anthony, Terrance Anthony, Robert Augustine, Antonio Avellino, Stephen Colin, William Gabriel, Stephen Kenneth, Stephen Lasalle, Vincent Malachy, William Mark, William Oliver, Thomas Owen and Ulmos. Can’t the Christine Brothers keep better track of themselves? Maybe we should put one of those brothers on this committee.
Now for the rest of us: Gary Abbott, Dick Aquino, Paul Callaghan, Pat Fleet, Pat Killpack, Dan Leary, Wayne Lukens, William Menzes, Thomas Mon Pere (Is he listed as Thomas Mon?), William O’Connell, James O’Donnell, Pat Parks and Robert Squeri.
Paul: Please add them to the list and update our base of names, then we can add addresses, etc,
Step #2 I will find our freshman yearbook and do the same. That should give us our operating base.
Step #3 is to locate everyone. I have found by helping with my daughters reunion that having a person involved with law enforcement really helps as they can do much better then Internet searches because my daughter found one of her fellow graduates on the Witness Protection Program and was she pissed.
Hoping for a better 2010, Paul Forney
Good morning all,
I thought yesterday’s conference call was a great start for our 50th reunion. I am sorry that my cell phone continued to drop out and I was unable to contribute much to the conversation. Pat, based on your comments I’m sure glad I missed the 45th.
I had two points that I wanted to make: first, this should be approached as a marketing effort since what we are really trying to do is convince a lot of people who, in the past, have probably not participated in many of the post graduation events. So, I think our website should be carefully planned, well in advance, to unfold the events that are promised over a period of time so as to build anticipation and suspense. I would be happy to participate in this planning.
Second Lisa, you mentioned that in order to get our gifts, which are made from now on, be pointed to the Class of 61 endowment we should form some kind of a base, or founding committee now to contribute initially. More information on that would be helpful because I think it would be a good idea to have a depository for gifts from here on.
Lastly Paul I don’t know if you have talked to Paul Forney, but he has been an aggressive booster of the rugby club for alumnus and I think could be a good addition to our initial committee.
I’m looking forward to renewing old acquaintances and working with all of you folks.
Jack
